Community Day Classes

Oregon Family School offers virtual and in-person weekly community day class at our Bend, Redmond, and La Pine campuses. In-person classes are from 9:00 am – 2:30 pm and offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at our Bend campus,  Wednesday only at our Redmond campus, and Thursday only at our La Pine campus.

Students are placed in a cohort of up to 16 students. During community day, students participate in community building, math, reading, science, history, geography, PE, and music activities. Advisors follow the Core Knowledge Sequence for content across grades and use Universal Design in Learning concepts to ensure that all students can access the learning. For many OFS students, Community Day is a highlight of their week!

Friday Enrichment Classes

We offer a variety of optional enrichment classes for K-12th grade in our Friday Enrichment program on the Bend campus.   Please refer to the academic calendar to find specific dates for these offerings. A link to sign up and detailed class descriptions for the session will be sent out in our weekly email.

Allotment funds can be used to cover the cost of Friday enrichment classes.

Monday Virtual Classes

We offer a variety of year-long virtual classes facilitated by OFS teachers. We have a range of classes including writing, math, phonics, PE, music, and art!

Writing

OFS facilitated Institute for Excellence in Writing courses are designed to be instructor-led one day a week with the parent continuing the course at home. The OFS instructor will introduce the assignment and model the “how to” on Monday and then students will complete their assignments at home under the guidance of their teaching parent for the rest of the week. If parents are unclear about the writing assignment, then they will consult the teacher’s manual and watch the recording of the class that was taught on Monday before reaching out to the OFS instructor for assistance. You can expect your student to turn in a writing sample each week via Google Classroom. The OFS instructor will collect sample work each week and give some feedback, but the primary responsibility of editing the assignment and assigning a grade will be with the parent.

Math

OFS facilitated Teaching Textbooks Math courses are designed to be instructor-led one day a week with students continuing the course at home. The OFS instructor will pre-teach content and key vocabulary as well as work on problem-solving strategies with students. Students will complete the assigned lesson at home during the week. The OFS instructor will monitor weekly progress and offer support to students struggling with particular lessons or concepts.

Art

The K-3 class focus will be to enjoy the art process through the use of short picture books and teacher-directed lessons. The 4-8 class focus will be “Art through History.”

PE

Come join us for virtual P.E on Mondays, where we partake in fun-filled physical activities and games. We often warm up with a virtual obstacle course where we pretend to run, jump, throw, kick, and dance our way through the course. We then play fitness games like, “Would You Rather”, where we pick silly answers, share about them, and partake in exercises based on our picks. Exercises might include jogging in place, doing a plank, holding a pose, stretching, and more. Our goal for K-8 P.E is to make exercise fun while offering an outlet for students to move, socialize, and learn about fitness.

Music

Foundations of Music Appreciation for each grade level. Melodies and harmonies, chords, performance and other musical topics will be taught with an overview of reading musical scores through assigned workbook activities and virtual musical opportunities.
