Reading Support
We believe that all children have the right to read which is why we have invested in screening, research-based curriculum , and staff development. Due to dyslexia having a genetic component, we encourage all families that have a history of reading difficulties to contact their Advisors to fill out the foundational reading skills survey. Additionally, any family with a student who presents with reading weaknesses will be given the foundational reading skills survey to determine if further testing is needed, or if a different curriculum should be considered.
Barton Tutoring: 1:1 Barton tutoring is available for our students who present with characteristics of dyslexia.
Lexia: Lexia programs are great options for all students. This supplemental program provides direct and explicit instruction in decoding skills, vocabulary, syntax, comprehension and fluency. It is offered to students for $40 of allotment funds per year.
Writing Support
Students in grades K-8 are invited to take part in several different Institute for Excellence Writing (IEW) Classes facilitated by Oregon Family School teachers. IEW’s unique approach provides the structure that students need to develop confidence in the writing process, while gradually guiding them toward greater independence and creativity. IEW is easy to use, enjoyable, flexible, and is a lifelong investment in your children. These classes will be offered on Mondays virtually through Zoom. Progress Monitoring
We are dedicated to empowering our parents to provide the best home-based education possible. One of the most effective ways to determine if your child is making progress throughout the year is by having them take part in progress-monitoring assessments. First, to determine a baseline (where your student is currently working) and second to identify their progress. Our school-wide assessments are given at the beginning, middle and end of each school year and measure literacy and math.
Measure of Academic Progress (MAP): OFS uses the MAP assessments to measure student progress in literacy (K-8th) and math (3rd-8th). It provides parents with accurate, and actionable evidence to help target instruction for each student regardless of how far above or below they are from their grade level.
